“Is your day off to a good start, and is that the norm?”
This was the question posed by Dr. Stephanie Foster, a professional speaker mastermind. I reflexively responded aloud, “Always!”
I hate to admit that the next five minutes were spent in self-evaluation rather than giving the speaker my attention. I was on an inward quest, and I had to know why I responded that way. I was instantly conflicted.
Is it because every morning gets off to a good start? Absolutely not.
As a single dad, I have three teenagers to get up, dressed, fed, and out the door to the carpool lane. If you have kids you know that some mornings don’t get off to a good start.
I own three companies. I wake up every morning to emails demanding my attention. They are not always pleasant.
I’m a runner and have awakened to new pains. I’m in a new relationship. You can imagine it’s not always Valentine’s Day in my world. I work with over a dozen individuals helping a church’s music program in my spare time.
There’s a lot that can go wrong with every single morning of my life. And it does.
So, why do I reflexively affirm that every day is off to a good start? Perhaps it’s because I have come to trust that every single experience is a gift, though it may not look that way immediately.
When I find myself in a rut where I’m having more bad mornings than good, there are some simple steps I take to turn things around.
- Reflect
Sometimes when things are not off to a good start, I need to pull back and reflect. What’s going on inside of me? Why am I feeling the way that I am? Is this part of something bigger? Am I taking on too much? Do I just need to find my inner calm?
- Quit
While none of us want to be called a quitter, sometimes quitting can put you on the path to winning. I was recently considering a real estate investment. I lacked clarity and this investment was causing anxiety. While in a session with my business coach, he advocated that I drop it. Immediately. My coach encouraged me to put all my attention into a different business area. I walked out of that session with a load off my shoulders, focused, and pumped to build my business.
- Course correct
Sometimes I’m just heading the wrong way. And these moments of discomfort can be a wake up call that it’s time to head in a new direction. I just need to pay attention to the universe and be willing to change course when necessary.
So, it’s not that every day begins with a great morning, but every experience is a gift. When it doesn’t feel like a gift, take a few minutes to reflect on the situation. Ask if you need to quit something in your life that’s causing stress, and explore areas where you may make a course correction and discover a new path.
Every morning is a gift and you determine how your day will go.
